As of game time yesterday, the Mets’ 26-man roster had 15 pitchers and 11 hitters. And with injuries to the starters, only four are listed as SP, which means there are 11 relievers on the squad. And not one of those 11 relievers are in a good spot to pitch in today’s game, even after just having four days off for the All-Star break. Here are the 11 bullpen options, with what they’ve done in the five days since the break:
Edwin Diaz – Pitched twice and was horrible both times. Had a day off yesterday. Could probably use two more days off but Mets don’t have that luxury
Seth Lugo – Can use the same comment from Diaz above, except Lugo threw 13 more pitches
Trevor May – Pitched Sat-Sun-Mon
Miguel Castro – Pitched Friday and then back-to-back Sun-Mon
Aaron Loup – Thrown three of the last four days and should not be used today
Jeurys Familia – Has thrown 51 pitches since the break but is the only reliever currently to have had two days off
Drew Smith – Used yesterday and three times since the break and should not be used today
Yennsy Diaz – Has tossed 43 pitches the past two days and should not be used today
Stephen Nogosek – Threw 48 pitches Tuesday and is unavailable today
Geoff Hartlieb – Yesterday threw 31 pitches and should not be used today
Anthony Banda – Monday threw 30 pitches and there’s speculation he may be used soon as an opener
The Mets will probably put Robert Stock on the injured list and call up another pitcher for today. So, it’s Familia, new guy from the minors and hope Marcus Stroman can go seven innings.
I like what I saw from Banda.
Baez and Kimball for Guillorme and Ginn.
That trade wouldn’t get you one of the Cubs guys, much less two.
