Big names or being traded left and right while the Mets have been on the sidelines, allegedly suffering from “sticker shock” when they checked in on the price to get Jose Berrios from the Twins. In addition to Berrios, the Mets have been rumored to be in on Javy Baez and Kris Bryant from the Cubs and Jon Gray of the Rockies, among others. You can make the case the Mets could use a SP, a RP or a power RHB. It’s difficult when you see other contenders getting the likes of Max Scherzer and Trea Turner and not want to make a counter move. But do you want to thin out an already-thin farm system to make a big deadline move possible?
What should the Mets do at the trade deadline?

Try to get one big bat + one starter + one reliever today.
There seems to be a lot of competition for Berrios, so if we can’t get him for Mauricio + Santos, move on to Gray or Davies. Renting Bryant or Baez would be OK, with my preference for the former player.
Could we swing a deal with the Cubs for Bryant, Kimbrel and Davies? Yes we can! For Lee, Santos, Ramirez, Szapucki, Palmer and Cortes? Another package would be Story, Gray and Bard. I’m not sure we could swing a deal for them, but it’s worth a try!
Just not Javy Baez. Too many strikeouts.
Love to have Story (play 3B?), Bryant is also good. Escobar is cheaper than both… would fit in with this team in clubhouse better.
Jon Gray seems most reasonable. Another lefty in the pen… does Andrew Miller have anything left?
Berrios for Mauricio and 10-15 prospect.
Bryant for an above #5 prospect .
Rental reliever for an above #15 prospect .
Berrios to the Blue Jays for their #4 prospect , and ex Met Wood-Richardson and Martin who was the overall #5 pick of the 2021 draft. My proposal was shy of the Jays offer.
The Blue Jays paid a lot steeper price for 1.5 years of Berrios than they got for 1.5 years of Stroman.
Bryant with for 2 prospects, #9 outfielder and #30 pitcher. If the Mets were able to trade their #5 prospect who was an outfielder for Baez and Williams then they should have traded for Bryant and Williams and included and 10+ above pitching prospect. I would have rather had Bryant than Baez. I would have done the Gibson/Kennedy deal (that the Phillies) made as the priority for the Mets.
The thing is this: look at the moves all he other genuine competiion is doing, even the Phillies. If the Mets somehow survive the NLE pennant, they are going to be destroyed in the post season.
If not now, when? Maybe this is not the year.
A team need to be elastic enough to change directions on short notice when conditions permit. Mets certainly in position to win the East. Is that enough for Stevie Cohen in year 1?
I think the likelihood to win the WS is super low as the team is constructed. As of today, the Mets and Brewers are the only teams in single digit percent predicted to win WS. So, maybe this isnt the year to empty the coffers for rentals (except for Barrios perhaps)
10-1 tied for 5th best odds to win the series with san Fran. Ahead of Boston.
I voted for making the best move they can without moving top prospects. I don’t think there’s a major need for a high end starter, especially a rental. With Carrasco coming back and deGrom on the horizon, they have 6 legitimate starting options. The offense has also looked better and I’m not sure what the cost would be to upgrade there, but likely not worth a top prospect (and I’m with Wobbit – I don’t wan’t Baez). That leaves me looking for a rental reliever. I’d rather they stand pat than make a crazy deal and decimate the top 10 prospects again.
I’m not sold on the value of prospects. Most of them never pan out, and you don’t win in the postseason without a legit roster. Sure, you have to keep a core of future talent intact, but trading a few prospects for a player you badly need now is a no-brainer.
Sorry, but JD Davis came out blazing and is now in quite a funk. He has to hit in order to compensate for his glove… he is a top 10 DH for the next decade, very valuable to some team. Since he won’t play if they get Bryant, trade him to the Cubs with fewer prospects. Time running out on Conforto too.
Having pitched so little last year, it seems to me that there are a lot more injuries this year and our guys are getting tired with the greatly increased workload, so I think we should try to get another starter and two relievers. I think Gray would be serviceable and I would be in favor of Chafin from the Cubs.
I don’t think as presently constituted the Mets would get slaughtered in the playoffs, notwithstanding what other teams are doing, though what LA is doing is scary. Our pitching matches up well and our hitting, while not elite, is both good and scrappy. I don’t see a hitter available out there who would be a significant upgrade at the plate. While Bryant is an upgrade defensively, I don’t think he’s much better, if any better than Davis and if we get Bryant, it puts Davis on the bench, which is a waste, in my opinion. Better that we trade Davis for Bryant and some relievers.
To James point, from 2019 to 2021 (Davis’ time with the Mets) his OPS+ is 131. In the same time period Bryant’s is 126.
Maybe I’m jaded as a Met fan. The Mets always seem to be selling in a buyers market and buying in a sellers market. Kimbrel and Berrios would have fit very nicely, but I would not have paid the price for either. While I want the Mets to improve, I hope they do not overpay at the wire just to appease the fanbase.
+1
Sounds like Baez and Trevor Williams are on their way here. I hope we did t give up much.
I read that Crow-Armstrong (What!) is the guy we’re giving up. Williams is the best pitcher we could get? Hopefully we get some better ones in the next 50 minutes!
They over paid for Baez and Williams. If it was Bryant and Williams it would still be an overpay but might be palpable.
Agree. Looks like Bryant is going to SF.
Not exciting at all. We had shortstops aplenty, then got Lindor. We have a second baseman or 2, and get a shortstop who has to move to 2B. Whats missing is the black hole at 3B and quality starting pitching.
Disappointing.
Baez can also play 3rd.
