Brandon Drury blooped a ball just past a drawn-in infield to bring home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning, as the Mets completed an 8-7 come-from-behind win Wednesday afternoon against the Nationals at Citi Field.
The Mets had battled back from two separate three-run deficits, as they trailed 4-1 and 7-4 in the game. A big game from the top three hitters made all of the difference, as Brandon Nimmo, Jeff McNeil and Pete Alonso combined to get on base eight times and scored six runs. J.D. Davis also had two doubles and Michael Conforto drove in two runs.
A big game from the offense was a welcome sight, as was another strong outing by the bullpen. While technically the three runs that Rich Hill allowed will go on the relievers’ ledger, the club’s actual relief pitchers combined for five innings of shutout ball. Trevor May picked up the win and Edwin Diaz got the save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning that took just eight pitches.
Originally scheduled to be a doubleheader, the nightcap was rained out. They’ll try to play two games on Thursday, with the first game scheduled for 12:10.
Nice to see the offense breakout and our relievers do a fine job. Hard to believe our 8-7 lead was the first time we led a game in a week. 1 game out of first after the Dodgers finish off the Phils tonight. Stats show we have a great record when we score 4 or more runs in a game. How hard can that be Stro on the mound tomorrow and TBD for the second game. Keep the faith.
From last night’s Game Chatter:
Name
gonna take 8 to win today. haven’t scored that many since 7/19
Brian Joura
McNeil and Alonso should come up again, so they should have a chance for 8
ChrisF
i don’t see 8 Name
I post this for two reasons – one, to tweak ChrisF (because I know he can take it) and two, to encourage people to show up to the Chatters because you can have fun interactions with other members. People drop in and out of the Chatter and you can’t get discouraged if no one is there the second you show up. Stick around a few minutes, leave some comments – even if it’s just saying what just happened in the game – and eventually someone will respond. Hope to see you there for at least one of the games today!
That was a gift win from the Nats last night, but boy did the Mets need it, and the Nats have been very generous to the Phillies and Braves recently so I expect equal treatment for the Mets.
One thing is bewildering to me…why any major league pitcher would ever throw Javy Baez a strike, especially on the first pitch.
