The Mets’ rally in the eighth inning was short circuited by a key blown strike call – bring on the robot umps – and they fell to the Dodgers, 3-2, Friday night in Los Angeles.
With runners on second and third, Jeff McNeil took a pitch that should have put him on first base. Instead, it was called a strike for the second out of the inning. Pete Alonso hit a dribbler to drive in a run that cut the deficit in half. Michael Conforto drew a 10-pitch walk to load the bases. But J.D. Davis looked at strike three to end the threat.
The Mets’ first run came on a homer by Alonso.
Carlos Carrasco gave up 3 ER in 5 IP and took the loss. Carrasco retired the last eight batters he faced and three Met relievers had 1-2-3 innings. They retired the last 17 batters for the Dodgers. But it wasn’t enough, as the timely hits are never to be found – 1-6 with RISP tonight – and the team just isn’t good enough to survive a bad call by the umpire.
Six games out. This is really painful. Maybe they can catch the Nats on the way down.
To be honest, I am really tired of this team. Five years since the playoffs and more of the same old same old. I am ready for them to make some big changes.
