Tomas Nido, who picked off a runner in the top of the 10th inning, tied the game in the bottom of the 10th with a two-out double and he scored the game-winning run when the pitcher threw errantly to first base on what should have been the final out of the inning, lifting the Mets to a wild 5-4 win over the Marlins Saturday afternoon. The win lifted the Mets’ record in extra-inning games to 7-0.
On the day that the Mets retired Keith Hernandez’ number 17, an honor he got in no small part because of his defensive wizardry and overall baseball smarts, this game was lacking in those two departments. In addition to the error in the bottom of the 10th, the Mets committed one in the top of the frame to give the Marlins the lead.
There was also a wild pitch that allowed the Marlins to take a 2-1 lead, a pitch that didn’t look all that bad and one that perhaps the catcher should have caught.
Pete Alonso hit a solo homer and Francisco Lindor banged one off the fair pole for a two-run shot for the Mets’ offensive output in the first nine innings.
Both Starling Marte and James McCann left the game early with injuries. Marte had an issue with his groin, while McCann got hurt making a successful tag at the plate on an incredible play. Brandon Nimmo, who’s not known for his arm, chased a ball down deep in the outfield and fired a throw quickly to the cutoff man. Luis Guillorme then made a beautiful relay throw to get an out at home. Both Marte & McCann are expected to undergo testing on Sunday to see the extent of their injuries.
Another nice outing from Corrasco and another disappointing game for JD and Escobar. Big HR by Pete to break his streak. Lindor made his one hit count. Nido really stepped up after coming in as a replacement. Would love to steal this series and we’ll have our work cut out for us with their ace on the mound tomorrow. Walker should give us a chance to win.
“Steal the series” against the Marlins? Wow 86…
I have really railed against Escobar lately and every game he gives more and more reason to. I’m wondering if George Steinbrenner wouldn’t have released him by now…. Sometimes when a player is in a funk, all aspects of his game show it. The professional is supposed to not show it, but…. What the heck does Showalter need to see before he gives him two straight days off although with Marte out, McNeil will probably be in RF and Guillorme at 2B every game so the alignment will force Escobar to be in there. Is Davis really that incapable over there? People used to say that about Flores all the time, but how do other teams learn to value such a player but the Mets are unable to?
Then there is Jesus Aguilar… I wonder what his manager thinks of this dog of a player. I don’t care about the HR because it’s expected he will run into one from time to time. But on the last play of the game, on a wide throw from the mound, he didn’t even reach out to attempt to help his team. Forget moving his feet to reach a throw obviously wide of the bag, he didn’t even reach out with his glove. What a stiff!
First extra inning walk off on an error since…game 6 86…on Keith hernandez Jersey retirement day with Mookie in the house. Baseball gods know what they are doing.
Good Reaction: this was an unlikely win because they were down one run with two out and Nido (512 OPS) batting. The Marlins lack leadership from the dugout and on the field. They are fundamentally not sound. They have the talent but they need a Keith Hernandez player to right their ship. Scherzer is spoken for.
Diaz has been dominant and should be an All-Star. Let’s win the series today. LGM
