Yu Darvish shut down the Mets for the second time in as many starts this year, leading the Padres to a 4-1 win over the Mets Friday night at Citi Field.
Darvish throws as many pitches as Chris Bassitt and the Mets couldn’t do anything against any of them for most of the night. He gave up his first walk of the game in the seventh inning and that’s the only run the Mets scored, as Jeff McNeil scampered home on Luis Guillorme’s RBI double. It was the first run allowed by Darvish in 14 innings this year against the Mets.
Max Scherzer started for the Mets and pitched well. He served up a gopher ball to Eric Hosmer, a two-run shot, for the only runs he allowed in six innings. The Padres added two more runs against Joely Rodriguez.
It likely didn’t alter the outcome of the game but the umpiring was not good. Rodriguez should probably have had a strikeout but it was called a ball. And with the reprieve Trent Grisham homered. It was that type of night.
Gut Reaction: Darvish was very good, better than Max. The Mets need have to figure some way to score in these type of games. Playoffs have these type a games. Vogelbach should help the offense vs RHP but Holderman hurts. Last night, Rodriguez pitching hurt. Williams was good and should get more responsibilities going forward.
Let’s win tonight. LGM
