We all hoped that Brett Baty would come up and hit like Michael Conforto did in 2015 but that hasn’t happened. The Mets were able to shield Conforto from facing a bunch of lefties early, something they haven’t done with Baty. But it’s not like he’s faced a ton of LHP – only eight of his 31 PA have come against southpaws. And while he’s doing worse against lefties, his .589 OPS versus righties isn’t great, either.
Essentially, in this very limited sample, Baty is performing like Robinson Cano.
BB – 31 PA, .493 OPS
RC – 43 PA, .501 OPS
So, what should the Mets do when Eduardo Escobar comes back? Baty doesn’t look like a deer caught in headlights. Keith Hernandez has praised his swing. Will it hurt his development if he spends most of the time on the bench? Will it hurt his confidence if he’s sent back to the minors? Will it hurt the Mets if they use him in a platoon with Escobar?
It’s not an easy decision for Buck Showalter and Billy Eppler to make.
It’s a pennant race and that comes first. When Escobar comes back Baty goes down. He’ll be back but holding off the Braves is the priority. Get well Louie….
This short debut shows that he isn’t quite ready. Remember, he only played a few games at AAA before he came up. Needs more AAA seasoning.
On another note, every time I rag on Alonso, he comes up big and hits some home runs. When he is cold, the Mets somewhat struggle. Not a big fan of Pete. Rather have a Hernandez type player at first. Gold Glove, 90 RBI a year. .290 hitter.
Let’s hope we can hold off the Braves. Seems like all the Braves do is play the Nats, Phillies and Pirates.
Need to win big in Colorado and split with the Dodgers.
Agree with the others on Baty…he goes back to AAA to play daily when Escobar returns. Great story with HR in 1st AB, bright future despite the poor overall numbers, but Escobar, even LH, is better at this stage, and Brady can use more AAA seasoning.
Baty, Vientos, and Alvarez should be factors for the 2023 Mets…barring a deal for Othani.
