David Peterson combined with three relievers on a shutout, the 17th time this season the Mets blanked their opponent, as the Mets capped a memorable day with a 3-0 win over the Rockies.

It was an eventful day, being the Mets’ first Old Timers Day in decades, one complete with the surprise announcement that the club was retiring Willie Mays’ number. And Peterson kept the good vibes coming with his strong outing.

After a rough first inning, Peterson settled in to give 6 IP with 0 BB and 7 Ks. It was his seventh win of the season and Peterson lowered his ERA to 3.21 for the year.

Seth Lugo looked great in the seventh inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced. Trevor May handled the eighth with no problem and Adam Ottavino got the call in the ninth, with Edwin Diaz pitching the last two games. Ottavino gave up a hit but nothing else and earned his second save of the season.

Brandon Nimmo was the star offensively for the Mets. He led off with a home run in the first inning and he had an RBI double in the second. In the seventh he walked and scored the third run on a double by Starling Marte.

There were two more hits by red-hot Mark Canha, including another extra-base hit, giving him 11 XBH in his last 12 games.

The Mets go for the sweep on Sunday, with Max Scherzer on the mound.

I don’t have to make this decision today — actually, it’s far from my decision to make, ever — but I’d slot Peterson into the 2023 starting rotation. Make that commitment. It would help pay for Jake, Max, Bassitt.

I guess I let Carrasco walk, thank him for services rendered.

Teams need depth, I get that, but Peterson has impressed this season. Earned this shot.

OTOH: He’s also a valuable trade chip.

Peterson has impressed this season and no doubt earned the right to be in the mix for 2023 starters.

The Mets have no upper level pitching available for 2023 whatsoever. Peterson and Megill are it…making it extremely difficult to deal either unless frankly it would be for Othani. Even it that scenario they’d only be able to include one of those two.

For what all the pitchers not named Jake or Max will get paid next season, I would still bring back Cookie and Walker. We would not be I first place without them. Pete certainly deserves a chance to be in their starting five and trading him would be inadvisable given their lack of pitching depth at the minor league level. Still waiting for them to lock up Nimmo and maybe 5 years $100 mil does it. Canha starting to hit like the player we traded for. Nice to see Escobar back on the field as he is a much stronger fielder than Baty. All Baty needs to do is hit well when he gets a chance and the 3B job will be his next year. Guillorme is 2 weeks into his 3-4 weeks on the injured list and getting him back is vital. Max for the sweep today. Beating up on the crappy teams and splitting with the Dodgers will work wonders for our lead over the Braves. About time the Cards beat the Braves and I like them to win today behind Wainright. It’s all still one game at a time.

Gut Reaction: excellent shutout pitching by Peterson and the bullpen. Pitching, pitching, pitching with good defense gives them a chance ever night. This was the case last night. Nimmo was the hitting star and Marte again was the supporting player. It is tough to win and worrisome that they were only 1-10 RISP. It was awesome that their center fielder hit a homerun when the Mets retired #24 ,Willie Mays’ number. I was so ecstatic when they obtained him in 1972!
Another series win and a sweep is looming with Max on the mound. LGM
