The Mets fell behind by four runs but used power to get the lead and then Edwin Diaz provided power of his own, striking out three in his four-out save, as the Mets beat the Brewers, 7-5, Tuesday night in Milwaukee.
The Mets loaded the bases with two outs in the first inning but could not push a run across. Starting with the last out in the first, the Mets went 14 straight batters without anyone reaching base. But then the flood gates opened.
Mark Canha was hit by a pitch and that was followed by a Francisco Lindor single. Pete Alonso then unloaded a 425-foot bomb to center, his second 3-run homer in two nights. The big blast made it a 4-3 game.
In the next inning, the Mets loaded the bases again, this time on three walks. But Canha struck out for the second out of the inning and it looked like maybe the Mets would squander another shot with the bases juiced. But Lindor hit a grand slam homer on the first pitch he saw, giving the Mets their first lead of the game at 7-4.
Carlos Carrasco didn’t have his best stuff and left after just 4 IP with 3 ER allowed. The Mets had to go heavy to their bullpen and it wasn’t perfect but they got the job done. Joely Rodriguez retired all three batters he faced and ended up with his second win this week.
Diaz, who hadn’t been as sensational as he was earlier in the year, came on with two outs, a run in and a runner on in the eighth inning. He blew away Rowdy Tellez for the final out of the inning and then came back in the ninth and struck out Kolten Wong and Andrew McCutchen, getting the final strike on a 102-mph fastball for his 31st save.
While struggling offensively for too long, the Mets have now scored 37 runs in their last six games. After getting off to a rocky start in September by dropping two of three to the Nats and getting swept by the Cubs, the Mets are now 12-7 this month. They close out the series with the Brewers with an afternoon game on Wednesday. A win would give them a sweep and tie their season-high with a seven-game winning streak.
With 12 games to, each one is important. Walker for the sweep this afternoon – another game to DVR as work gets in the way. Two big swings produced all 7 runs and they came from the two stars on our team. If we had scored some in the first, then Cookie might have been given another inning or two but we could not risk falling further behind. At 4-0 I was worried until Alonso hit his bomb and remembered that we are rarely out of a game. Lindor simply said enough of this shit and capped it off with the slam. Kudos to the pen who did heavy lifting and Diaz who has established himself as the closer premiere. LGM
Gut Reaction: 2 swings and 7 runs topped off by a dominant ending.
Diaz was again dominant. He is the best closer and leads all closers the MLB with 2.7 fWAR, FIP, K/9 and k’s. Last tonight he threw 15 pitches and 14 of them were strikes which resulted in 3 K’s. That is dominant!
Rodriguez had another good appearance In his the playoff roster quest. Vientos not so good and probably was eliminated if he was considered in the first place. It will be interesting.
Capitalizing on mistakes.
Gimme 3 consec walks and you deserve the granny thats comin at ya.
