The Mets made a surprise move, adding catcher Omar Narvaez on a 2/$15 million deal. An All-Star om 2021, Narvaez fell off offensively last year. But he remains a solid pitch framer and he posted a 1.1 fWAR in just 84 games played with a .597 OPS. For a comparison, James McCann had a .538 OPS last year in 61 games and had a 0.4 fWAR.

It’s hard to imagine McCann, Narvaez and Tomas Nido on the team at the same time, to say nothing of Francisco Alvarez. There have been rumors of the Mets shopping McCann and perhaps this is an indication that the Mets feel they can successfully move McCann, who’s under contract the next two seasons.

My hope was that they could move McCann and have Alvarez and Nido share the job. What are the odds they move both McCann and Nido? Seems small to me. Will the Mets go three catchers? That seems to be the only hope for Alvarez to make the Opening Day lineup.

Narvaez has an opt-out after the first year of the contract.

It’s almost certain that McCann will be gone in a trade, with the two veteran catchers who remain platooning. I like the LH/RH combo.

Alvarez needs to develop his catching skills, which he can do at AAA. He only caught 31 games at Syracuse last year.
