Someone named Michael Schwab posted on X the following:
I’m hearing a deal is in place to send Max Scherzer to the Texas Rangers, contingent on if he wavies his no-trade clause, per sources familiar with the conversations.
Further down in the tweet someone said:
Bro throwing a Hail Mary. Acting like he got sources
Someone else said:
Everyone should know by now that Michael Schwab is not a real reporter
However, Andy Martino reported the two sides were deep in discussions on a deal. And someone else from the X thread of Schwab’s said:
Luis Angel Acuna and Sebastian Walcott would be the return if scherzer approves it
Walcott is a 3B from the Bahamas and FanGraphs has him as the Rangers #3 prospect. He has a .304/.356/.598 line in the CPX, the same level as the two prospects the Mets got from the Marlins. Walcott is 17.
Acuna is a SS who FG ranks as Texas’ fourth-best prospect. He has a .317/.377/.453 line in 402 PA at Double-A. He’s 21
I’m off to my CPL game and will be unable to update this until late tonight. Please post anything new in the comments.
I’m seeing “reports” that it’s Acuna, Brock Porter (P #4 prospect) and Thomas Saggese
For this haul I’m guessing the Mets are paying A LOT of Max’s $$ this year and next.
Edit: If it’s the haul above that’s the rangers #3, 4 and 15 prospects. And I’m seeing we’re sending $15 million along with Max (who will also get a raise by not paying state tax in Texas)
It’s all speculation at this point but what you have there would be a hell of a hall for a rental, especially one who hasn’t pitched well.
Scherzer to Rangers. Waives no trade.
Looks like the return is Luis Acuna, brother of Ronal Acuna.
It’s official. I think it was a great trade if that’s who we get. A 40 year old pitcher trending down. Verlander is the better of the two right now. I feel much better going into next year with only one of them in the rotation.
Excited for the Mets future.
No reason to keep Verlander either. He will bring more back, and that is clearly what is happening.
I am going to miss Scherzer. It was fun while we had him. I wish him well. I’ve always been a fan of him. Knew he was going to be a great pitcher early in his time in Arizona.
Carrasco – we should trade Carrasco for a box of pop tarts. And that, would be a good deal.
I was now reading that it is only Acuna. I am still happy. I always envied the Braves for having him and said why can’t we find an Acuna. Well, now we have one. I had no idea he had a brother who could also run like him.
So, Uncle Steve is paying $36 million in salary plus associated taxes pushing the cost to over $60 million for Scherzer to pitch 1 1/3 seasons for the Rangers. In return he get one top 100 prospect, and avoids an additional $22.5 million in salary plus taxes pushing that to $40 million. And, of course, the void at the top of the big league rotation. Maybe the wisest move to make at this point of a season that is a colossal failure, but hard to get excited about…this should have yielded a 2nd prospect ranked 10-15.
