The Mets didn’t get David Peterson stretched out in the bullpen to prepare for his return to the starting rotation. So, he left after three scoreless innings. The option relievers continued to be less than good and the end result was a 10-3 loss to the Orioles Friday night in Baltimore.
John Curtiss was the first one to crack. Curtiss started the year with the Mets and was sent down because, well, because he wasn’t any good at all. Incredibly, Gary and Ron were talking how they were surprised that Curtiss was in the minors as long as he was. Hello, McFly, Curtiss had a 7.17 ERA and a 1.688 WHIP in Triple-A. The surprise wasn’t that Curtiss was in the minors as long as he was, the surprise was that the Mets viewed him as being worthwhile to throw out there again.
Curtiss allowed 2 ER in 1 IP.
The Mets tied the game on a two-run single by Francisco Lindor, which came after they loaded the bases with three walks.
But the “B” relievers fell down once more. Phil Bickford gave up four runs in the sixth inning and Reed Garrett allowed four more in the seventh.
Brandon Nimmo and Starling Marte returned to the lineup this game. Nimmo walked twice and scored a run. Marte went 0-4 and now has a .632 OPS. The Mets had Jeff McNeil, Marte and Brett Baty – the three biggest reasons why the offense has been so disappointing, batting consecutively. The trio went 0-11.
Gut Reaction: brutal loss. Unwatchable.
The Mets have a chance to evaluate their minor league players at the major league level because of this lost season. Instead they are playing retreads and AAAA players.
Mauricio should have been playing Left Field instead of Ortega.
Butto and Lucchesi should be on the roster and should be used as bulk relievers or starters.
Peterson should have pitched longer.
