Pete Alonso homered to back a strong outing from Jose Quintana, leading the Mets to a 4-2 win over the Cardinals in the opening of a four-game series in St. Louis Thursday night. It was the fourth win in the last five games for the Mets.

Alonso hit his 37th homer of the season in the fourth inning, a two-run shot to open the scoring and give Quintana the lead. Alonso now has 91 RBIs on the season.

Meanwhile, Quintana pitched six shutout innings before allowing two runs in the seventh. Three pitchers finished up, with Trevor Gott getting his first save as a Met but not before putting two runners on base. This was the first win for Quintana, who has pitched well since being activated from the IL, but who has been a victim of non-support.

Tim Locastro added a home run in the ninth inning. Francisco Lindor chipped in with an RBI double while Brandon Nimmo had two hits and a walk to lead the Mets’ attack.

Gut Reaction: Quintana pitched a nice game but ran out of gas. The Fox announcers said that the pitch clock it doesn’t give enough time for older pitchers to rest like in the past.
Locastro with his insurance run home run was a nice surprise.
Gott has a 3.38 ERA since coming to the Mets, the third best of the relievers. The last he up an earned run was July 22nd. He earned the chance to save the game. He is a free agent in 2025 and he only makes $1.2m. I have to tip my hat to Epler for an under radar good deal.
It was a nice win and a nice chatter.

We have to factor in the salary that they took on with Flexen as part of the deal. I mean, it’s nice that they have Gott under control for next year but if they were going to pay the money they did to acquire Gott, I wish they would have just gotten a better reliever for the start of 2023 with that money.

Grant Hartwig had a 3.26 ERA a week and a half ago and now it’s at 4.74.

Drew smith had a 1.88 ERA after 16 games and now it’s above 4.

No reason to celebrate a reliever after a decent month

As Ralph Kramden said ” I know that you know, what I know” that that relievers are fickle from one season to the next.

I can’t read this line without thinking of one of Eddie Murphy’s first big standup routines…

It is nice to get a few wins. What I am excited about is that Quintana is pitching well. Ortega is one of the top hitters with a .255 average.

Nice win over a struggling Cardinals team. Nice job by Gott to get the save. Need to win these games on the road too .500. Need to lock up Alonso sooner than later. He’s not going to get less expensive as time
    goes on.
