Let’s play a game. Below will be two slash lines for Mets players in September. See if you can guess who they are without looking up the numbers.

No Braves, no Phillies, no Marlins in World Series. I may actually watch some of the classic.

I’ll play…. I think B are Alvarez and Vientos. C is Baty and Mauricio. And A is Lindor and McNeil.

Is there a point to this brain buster, LOL?

As with all of the Open Threads, hopefully the introduction sparks comments. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn’t. But I appreciate you stepping to the plate and taking a crack.

      Pair B

Seems the Yankees have spoken to the Padres regarding Soto’s availability. While the Yankees have both the offensive need and the prospects to make it happen, Soto is the player I want on the Mets the most due to his remaining prime years. Now, he won’t be a cheap signing, and whoever trades a mint for him will then have to meet those Borasian demands, but, while Ohtani will be 30 next year, Soto will only be 25.

I think the three biggest bats in the news this winter will be Soto, Ohtani and Alonso, and notice, none of those three are in the playoffs. It takes more than one big bat to get to October and I’m hoping the Mets have more players like Lindor and less Alonso’s. I think a lineup that starts with McNeil, Lindor, Nimmo, a good DH, followed by Alvarez and Mauricio, has the makings of a good start.

The Mets didn’t buy a World Series contender but Texas did! They have three of the top 11 salaries in baseball for 2024 (Scherzer, deGrom,Seager). Arizona has no top salaries until #82 with Marte at $15.2m but they are in the World Series too.
Top ten salaries of Judge and Cole didn’t help the Yankees. Top 30 salaried players has Stanton and Rodon further embarrassed the Yankees.
San Diego had three of thirty top salaried players and didn’t made the playoffs either.
Boston, Anaheim, Cubs, Giants, Cardinals, White Sox, and our Mets are all in the top 15 in payroll that haven’t made the playoffs this year. Six teams of the bottom salaried teams made the playoffs this year. The Twins, Rays, Orioles, Brewers, Marlins, and Diamondbacks all went to the playoffs.
The Mets have the money but maybe they aren’t spending it wisely. Is depth more important then star power? Would you rather have 26 above average players on the roster then two or three bona fide Stars? I think I would because injuries and slumps occur and can derail a season. The Mets have the money to stock their roster with above average players.

Wow – shocked not to see Alonso among that “core” of Met batters. 40 plus HR, consistent 100 plus RBI, plays a pretty good 1B – seems like a no brainer to sign Pete to a deal. Soto will easily get a 10 year deal prob avg $30-$35 mil per. But hate to give up too much without knowing he will accept a deal going forward. Does Counsel get on board? Will he succeed in NY? It’s a retool not a rebuild for 2024 because only ten more wins and we get a wildcard spot. Who cares how you get in because as long as you have three good starters, and a strong pen you can take home the title. Still need to get some pitching.

Frank Howard, a four-time All-Star who slugged 382 home runs during a lengthy major league career that included a World Series title with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1963, has died. He was 87.
