The Mets put up seven runs in the first three innings and cruised to a 16-4 win over the Braves Thursday afternoon in Atlanta. The victory gave the Mets the series win over the Braves and upped their record on the season to 5-7.
Five Mets had multi-hit games as the team combined for 16 hits. And while they only had one hit each, both DJ Stewart and Tyrone Taylor both homered, with Taylor’s being a pinch-hit grand slam off former Met Luis Guillorme in the ninth inning.
Brandon Nimmo had a double and a triple, to go along with two runs scored and two RBIs. Francisco Alvarez and Jeff McNeil both had a double, two hits and two runs, with Alvarez driving in two and McNeil adding two walks and three RBIs.
Jose Quintana was the recipient of the offensive explosion and he gave four shutout innings before surrendering three runs in the fifth. Carlos Mendoza sent him out for the sixth and after retiring the first batter he faced, he was unable to put away Marcell Ozuna, who battled thru a 10-pitch AB before singling and knocking Quintana from the game at 100 pitches.
Drew Smith is off to a fine start and he gave the club a five-out performance. Tyler Jay closed it out with two innings in his MLB debut, eight days shy of his 30th birthday.
The Mets’ bats came alive in the series in Atlanta, combining for 39 hits and 29 runs in the three-game set. It’s almost too bad that there was a rainout, which will be made up in September.
Guillorme really did not look like his heart was into that at all. And for that to be his team debut? Hard to believe they couldn’t get him into a game as a defensive replacement at some point in the IF 2 weeks into the season. Poor guy.
Baty continues to show his top prospect status, and his defense has been more of a nice surprise than his offense.
Should be a fun series against the Royals.
The Braves want their players playing as close to 162 as possible. It’s their mentality.
Holy Pythagorean Win Expectation game , Batman!
I don’t know what is more pleasurable, trouncing the Braves or the Phillies. For today, it’s the Braves.
I hope the Met bats saved some hits for the Royals this weekend.
Too funny – I mentioned Pythagoras in the Game Chatter today.
And for me, it’s 100X more enjoyable to trounce the Braves than the Phillies.
I prefer to trounce the Braves. I prefer to stage epic comebacks against the Phillies bullpen.
Gut Reaction: series win and a successful road trip topped off by a 16-4 victory against the Braves. How can you not like it?
Four Mets are above 800 OPS and three are above 700 OPS. That is what they have when they score 16 runs in a early season game.
In the early season two players have shown a mark improvement in their game: Drew Smith and Brett Baty.
Ah, Mets 16 Braves 4. Life is good!!
Beating the Braves is the best. I also enjoy when they can beat the crosstown Yankees. Nice hitting display and even Lindor got a hit, even if his one hit in six trips to the plate lowered his batting average to .098. Nice day for McNeil who got back to the Mendoza line. If DJ Stewart hits a HR each time he gets a hit, he might lead the league. If you want a good chuckle, while he sat the bench today, Narvaez leads the team in OPS.
Good series win. What’s the over/under for how many innings we get from Severino tomorrow?
