Brandon Nimmo broke a 3-3 tie with a solo homer in the top of the seventh to lift the Mets to a 4-3 win over the Cardinals in the opener of a three-game series Monday night in St. Louis. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for New York.

The Mets jumped on top early in this one, as Francisco Lindor drew a two-out walk in the top of the first inning and came home on an RBI double by DJ Stewart. They tacked on two more in the fifth, as Tomas Nido and Brandon Nimmo opened the frame with singles, with both runners advancing due to an outfielder error. Starling Marte brought a run home with an infield groundout, one where the Cardinals’ defense was playing back. And a Lindor sac fly plated Nimmo for a 3-0 lead.

Sean Manaea was cruising and he had a low pitch count because he did not allow a walk thru the first five frames. But he ran into trouble in the sixth, as three hits and a walk led to three runs for the Cardinals.

But the Mets struck right back, as Nimmo pulled a ball 415 feet for his fourth homer of the year. The solo shot gives him 22 RBIs, which leads the team.

Jake Diekman, Adam Ottavino and Edwin Diaz closed it out, with each one throwing a hitless inning. Diaz looked much sharper this time out, getting a strikeout and two ground outs for his fifth save of the season.

I wonder why Wendle (who had 2 hits) was taken out and Alonso inserted at 1B halfway through the game?

Good game for the Mets pitching staff and the defense.

Nice team win with contributions from several and winning with small ball, a Nimmo blast and great relief pitching. One walk issued was a key to Manaea throwing six innings. Butto tries for his first win today as the Mets go for the series win.

Nice win…another blown lead but this time they avoided blowing the game. So far the 2024 Mets are finding a way to cling on to the hopes of playoff contention and avoid blowing the season early. Just enough to side step free fall motion. Their favorite month of the year, June, is not far away.

MLB replay continues to be a mystery to me.

No SBs and not too many walks. That certainly helps.
