The Mets fell behind, 3-0, before they even came to bat, came storming back to take a 10-5 lead, only to have to white knuckle it in the ninth inning before emerging with a 10-9 win over the Diamondbacks Friday night at Citi Field. The victory gave the Mets back-to-back wins for the first time since May 6-7, when they turned the trick against the Cardinals. In the interim, the club went 4-15.
The Mets rally started as soon as they got to bat. They loaded the bases and tied the game with a 3-run triple by Starling Marte and went ahead on an infield single by Mark Vientos.
In all, the Mets tallied 14 hits and four walks en route to scoring 10 runs. Every Met had at least one hit, with Vientos leading the way with three singles. Francisco Lindor, Marte and Brandon Nimmo each had two hits, while J.D. Martinez homered for the second straight day.
Despite the big early inning against him, Luis Severino hung around long enough to pick up the win. He allowed five runs – four earned – in five-and-a-third innings.
Sean Reid-Foley allowed just a walk in a scoreless eighth inning and returned to the mound for the ninth. After getting the leadoff man out, the next two batters reached base, prompting Carlos Mendoza to bring in Reed Garrett. After recording an out to the first batter he faced, Garrett surrendered back-to-back homers to cut the lead to one. But he struck out the next batter to end the game.
Tuned in at the 9th inning feeling great about a 10-5 lead and the probability of back to back wins. After taking two Tums, they did outlast the DBacks. Save for the 9th, the Mets played a good game with everyone contributing. Was not happy to hear Iglesias made an error becsuse I thought he was here for his glove but then I remembered the same disappointment when Wendel didn’t know which base to throw to. Trying for an elusive series win today with Manaea on the mound because you never know which Quintana will show up on Sunday.
Gut Reaction: They scored 10 runs .in Citi Field!
Severino labor for 88 pitches and he went out for the 6th. That decision was inconsistent. Mendoza pulls pitchers that are pitching well and has laboring pitchers continue to pitch.
Marte, Martinez and Lindor are heating up. Vientos had a good game with 3 hits and 2 RBI’s in his first games as the starting third baseman.
SRF gave up a weak infield hit , an out and a walk. He was pulled with a 10-5 lead for the last two outs and 23P. No wonder the bullpen is getting stressed.
Two in a row!
Agree on Reid-Foley being taken out.
Severino seemed to get better in the later innings of his stint, so I can see why Mendoza sent him out in the sixth inning.
I am still seeing comments about Vientos not being a good 3Bman defensively. I think he’s adequate out there. He makes most of the plays and has a rifle for an arm. To me, he passes the eye test. And his dWAR is only -0.1 (the same as Baty’s). His oWAR is 0.7 (compared to Baty’s 0.5, with many more PA for him).
Except for the Phillies coming up, our schedule isn’t too bad the next three weeks. We can go on a run and get back into the wild-card race!
An ugly win. And it counts just the same as a pretty win. It certainly wasn’t ugly for the offense. It looks like the pre-game team hypnosis session that convinced them they were in Arizona worked quite well. The team psychologist is paying dividends.
Some of us, and if I recall I was one. We’re hoping the Mets signed Montgomery. While the Mets have pretty much stunk the last few years, the pitchers they avoided signing – Bauer, deGrom, Matz, Montgomery, Snell, perhaps others I’m forgetting- imagine if they had some of this group on long term deals right now…
