The Mets didn’t hit a home run in the game, while the Marlins hit two. And the end result was a 4-2 loss Sunday in Miami.
Christian Scott got the start and he surrendered the big blow, a three-run homer, right after the Mets had taken a 1-0 lead in the top half of the inning. It’s the eighth home run Scott has allowed this season in the majors and gives him a 1.52 HR/9. There are 70 pitchers with enough innings to qualify for the leaderboards and a 1.52 would tie for the 65th-worst mark if Scott had pitched the required innings.
Making matters worse is that six of the eight homers that Scott has allowed have come with runners on base. Typically, around 58% of homers hit in the majors are solo shots. Scott’s now 0-3 for the year with a 4.56 ERA.
The Mets continued to struggle on offense here in the second half. In 27 innings, they’ve scored just seven runs. And they needed three errors by the Marlins’ catcher to score their two runs in this game. The Mets had a respectable eight hits in this game but were done in by striking out 14 times.
You know it’s a bad day when the highlight of the game was Jake Diekman throwing a scoreless 1.1 IP.
Scott’s big mistake was a flat slider on the inner half of the plate on a 3-2 pitch with first base open. Unforgivable. Right before that pitch, Scott threw a 2-2 fastball 18 inches outside. Kid is not ready for prime time.
Getting back to the days when Paul Seward was throwing flat sliders and giving up homers, or before him when Hansel Robles was giving up homers, what do all these people have in common?
They were RHP for the Mets and their genius pitching coach was Jeremy Hefner. The other two moved on to organizations that fixed them and helped them be successful. Again I ask: Can anyone remember a pitcher giving Hefner credit for helping him succeed?
The twinkies thought he was doing terrific work.
The lowly Marlins, forever peeing in the Mets punchbowl.
So we get one run against Roger’s and his 4.59 ERA. Do the players want the team to be buyers or sellers at the deadline? It’s really in their hands. Nimmo is in a little slump but still managed to draw two walks with his three Ks. This was a winnable game. If they don’t get a split tomorrow it will hurt.
Mets offense very pedestrian. Alonso not delivering. Too many sliders to LH batters from Mr. Scott. Weird game overall. But it’s an L
Gut Reaction: Scott gave up his daily gopher ball. He has promise but he shouldn’t be learning his trade in the majors. If the Mets land a back end reliever at the deadline, then they should insert Butto in the rotation and send Scott to AAA.
Win tomorrow and salvage a split in the series.
