If you were worried that the Mets would be without a Tyler/Tylor with the trade to acquire Paul Blackburn to take Tylor Megill’s spot, fear not. The club pulled off another deal with the Rays, acquiring reliever Tyler Zuber. While he has limited MLB experience under his belt, Zuber is a fastball-slider pitcher, with an average fastball in the mid-90s.
Zuber started this year with the Guardians but was released near the end of Spring Training. He wound up in Independent Ball with the Long Island Ducks and was picked up by the Rays in mid-May. In 21.2 IP in Triple-A this year, Zuber had a 12.05 K/9 and a 2.49 BB/9. He has swing-and-miss stuff. The problem happens when batters make contact. In 25 IP over the majors and minors, he’s allowed 4 HR.
To get Zuber, the Mets parted with Paul Gervase, a 6’10 reliever who had advanced to Double-A. Gervase had a 15.0 K/9 with the Rumble Ponies. Unfortunately, he also had a 5.5 BB/9. If he can get the walks under control, he’s got a chance to be good.
It’s not clear if the Mets plan to utilize Zuber in the majors or minors. But you figure with when they made the move, it’s more likely to be an MLB assignment. No word yet on who he might replace. And the Mets will have to make a roster move, as Gervase was not on the 40-man.
Saw a note on FB that Ty Adcock was DFAd
It seems that we have been made to watch a lot of pitchers who have no business being at the major league level.
Can’t imagine it was this bad 10 years ago. And with no stats to back me up, I would say when I was growing up these huge 5 months plus ERAs were few and far between. So bye bye Ty.
Zuber seems to be roster fill. Send him to Syracuse. He has options.
