The Mets continue to make moves on the margins, as they acquired reliever Huascar Brazobán from the Marlins. Brazoban has appeared in 97 games for the Marlins over the past three years and has posted a 3.56 ERA in 121.1 IP. He’s having his best season this year, with a 2.93 ERA and a 2.63 FIP over 30.2 IP. He has a 10.0 K/9, along with a 1.011 WHIP.
Brazoban is a hard thrower, with both his 4-seamer and sinker consistently in the mid-90s. He also throws a cutter and a change, with the cutter being his best pitch this season.
It’s been an interesting year for Brazoban, who never appeared in Spring Training due to visa issues. The Marlins placed him on the restricted list and ultimately sent him to the minors. Brazoban didn’t make his MLB debut until June and had a rough first month in the majors. But here in July, he’s thrown 13.2 scoreless innings, with 1 BB and 16 Ks.
The Mets sent Wilfredo Lara to the Marlins. There was some buzz around Lara after a strong season in Lo-A in 2023. But the 20 year old hasn’t followed up with an equally strong year at Hi-A. It’s been a solid campaign, one where he’s surprisingly done better at Brooklyn (.733 OPS) than he has on the road (.655 OPS) but clearly not one that made him untouchable.
If Brazoban can be remotely like the pitcher he’s been this month for the Marlins, it will be a nice pickup for the Mets. The Mets have yet to officially announce the corresponding moves to make way for their three new pitchers, although a report has them DFAing Ty Adcock as one of the moves
Oops. Bye bye Ty would have been more appropriate here. It is all a rationalization, but you have to think that David Stearns was simply not interested in giving up strong pieces of our rebuilt farm system for some rental pieces. And while these additions are certainly fringe trades, they potentially fill a strong need. It will be interesting to see how they will use all the new players.
Brazoban eis a good relief pitcher and a solid pick up by Stearns. He will go into the mix with Stanec and Maton. Quantity that is good but no premium quality that Stearns aquire for the bullpen.
