Before the series started, if you were told that the Mets were going to score19 runs in three games, you’d feel pretty good that they won two games and it wouldn’t have surprised you if they swept. Instead, they won just once, and it wasn’t Thursday, as they fell to the A’s, 7-6, in a game that they once led, 5-0.
• The best part of the game for the Mets were the two home runs hit by Mark Vientos
• Mets pitchers threw 212 pitches in the game and issued 11 walks
• Harrison Bader and Francisco Alvarez were honorary pitchers in this game, as they contributed mightily to the loss, with Bader going 0-4 and Alvarez going 0-2 and stranding four runners.
• The two teams combined to go 5-25 with RISP, with the Mets going just 2-11
Like the Angels series, this team will come to regret how they played. Reminds me a little of the 101 win season when down the stretch we had Oak-Town and none other than JdG choked and cost us the division.
Bleh!
I was working, so I don’t know why Torens was removed. He had a great game with the clutch single and the heads up defensive play. He seems like a winning player and I would prefer more of him than less of him, especially know and seeing that Alvarez is playing hurt.
Further, pinch hitting Alvarez for McNeil still left them with one catcher, so why remove Torrens?
Pitchers have bad days too.
Anyway, today’s loss was terrible
On a later date, we may look back at this game as being the death knell of their 2024 postseason hopes
Currently, they lie 6.5 behind the Pads/Snakes and 2 back of ATL in the wild-card chase
There’s 41 games left, and time is running out severely fast
That one pitch that Quintana threw, 3-2 count, bases juiced, 2 outs
Well, he wiggled out of the two previous bases-loaded scraps, but the third time was the charm
Name asserted that “you can’t win if you walk 11 batters”
Don’t tell him I said so, but I think he’s right
The following was posted in ESPN’s “recap” of today’s game
“It’s hard to win a baseball game when we give up (11) walks,” Mendoza said.
I know for fact that Name posted the above prior to ESPN’s post
What is this mysterious Name not telling us?
The pitching was awful and Quintana was the main culprit. However, the bats went to sleep in the last few innings when they were needed. Yeah, Oakland has a good pen, but, this is no excuses time for playoff teams. After the “tough” Marlins come in, the next 10 are against the Orioles at home then the red hot Diamondbacks and red hot Padres in the road. Objectively, there may be no meaningful Met games in September. That’s what losses like this one do to a playoff run.
Gut Reaction: it was a terrible loss. Quintana in his last three starts has pitched terribly. And yes, you can’t win giving up 11 walks and expect to win. When you have a 5-0 lead they are expected to win. It was a terrible loss.
In the last month, Bader has a .547 OPS and Taylor has a .773 OPS, McNeil has a .986 OPS, Alvarez has a .452 OPS. Against LHP this year,, McNeil has a 637 and Alvarez has 688. McNeil is hot. Alvarez is not. Bader is bad offensively. Taylor is not a hole in the batting order.
Terrible loss. This team obviously can’t win without scoring a lot of runs. The number of walks that are issued is unconscionable. This will be a very active off-season with the acquisition of couple of significant pitchers that need to be added to the roster.
