Luis Severino pitched perhaps his best game as a Met, leading the team to a 4-1 win over the Red Sox Monday night at Citi Field. The victory pushed the Mets to 10 games over .500 and within a half game of the idle Braves for the final Wild Card spot.

Severino came out extremely aggressive, as if he had a personal vendetta against this Sox team. He ended up with 7 IP and with a little better defense behind him, he might not have given up a run. Severino is now 10-6 for the year and he lowered his ERA to a 3.84 mark.

The Mets scratched across a run in the second inning but the Red Sox tied it in the third as Brandon Nimmo was unable to make a catch on a sinking liner that turned a single into a triple. The Mets went back ahead in the bottom of the inning, as Nimmo atoned for his misplay with an RBI double.

In the fourth inning, the Mets tacked on two more runs. DJ Stewart singled and scored from first on a double by Luis Torrens that the outfielder boxed around and was charged an error. Then Francisco Lindor drove home Torrens for the final run of the game.

Lindor finished the game with two singles and a HBP, raising his OPS to .835 for the season.

Danny Young put two runners on in the eighth but escaped the jam. With Edwin Diaz having pitched in four of the last five days, he was given the night off. Phil Maton pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out the last two batters, to earn his third save of the year and first as a Met. Gary Cohen said he became the 10th Met this year to record a save.

New York now has a five-game winning streak and has gone 12-5 in its last 17 games.

    Great win for the Mets!

One high point was when the Bosox and Mets fans chanted “Yankees Suck” together!

    LGM!

I can’t emphasize enough how much I take. Pleasure in the Mets competing no matter the outcome. Of course when they win, I’m thrilled. I’ve been a Mets fan since childhood. I’m now 68 and living in Northern Israel with the constant threat over our heads I literally live less than 20 miles from Lebanon. I live in the holy city on earth, and maybe it seems outrageous that a child’s game could be so meaningful, but it is. God bless us all.

Hot at the right time. It’s all jelling nicely. The team has great chemistry and they are playing fundamentally sound baseball. 5 more in a row please.

Couldn’t understand why Vientos sat in a must win game as one of your best available bats. Want to put Inglesias in at third, ok. But, Vientos could have taken JDM’s vacated DH spot. There is no reason Stewart needed to be in the lineup. Everything is working for Mendoza, and I hope he isn’t getting smug, but it appears he is. What manager sits one of his best hitters in a must win game in September?

In fact, having a butcher like Stewart in the field and Winker as a DH is even more lurid when you see Stewart drop a fly ball.

Agreed. Stewart in LF over Winker was the more puzzling decision. Having Stewart’s left handed bat in the lineup was more justifiable. Vientos has been laboring a bit at the plate.

The Mets played with an intensity that was clearly different than their usual lifeless offensive effort in game 1 returning from the road. Kudos again to Seve who rose to the occasion. Nimmo does take a lot of call strike 3s, and why Stew was in LF instead of Mr. Winker is head scratching. Anyhow, like others, thankful for September games that matter and the Mets showing spunk.
