“I think something as miniscule as that, I don’t understand why that would be the reason,” Carter said. “It got more blown out of proportion than it should have. It’s unfortunate that one radio station asked me if I would be interested and I said “yes.” That was the wrong thing politically to say, but I made my apologies. I even talked to Willie and he said “I know where your heart is, no big deal.” It’s over and done with.

“I don’t think that should be a cause to keep me from (managing). But nevertheless, it happened and it’s over with. A couple of years have gone by now.”

Carter dismissing the Randolph incident as a reason why he does not get interviews for managerial positions.

One comment on “Gary Carter on asking for Willie Randolph’s job

Shame that one blurp can ruin a career. Mets need to build interest in the club. If the financial matters are preventing them from making a splash to compete against the Phillies and basically you are conceding 2011 before it starts you should be looking at other ways to draw interest from the fans. Collins was the WRONG choice for manager. You need to do what the Yanks do, maintain Met heros and employ them in prominant positins to excite fans. If 2011 is a bust I would like to think 0f ’86. Backman should have been chosen before Collins. It’s not like we are going to be playing meaningful ball in September and a few games from a manager is going to make the difference. Anyway Collin’s experienced but not in MLB as a manager since ’99! Carter should be chosen above Collins. Damn even Tim Teufel!. Good move bringing Mookie back but was it really Hojo’s looking at the offense last year? Rookie catcher replaced two old catchers. Rookie 1B did well. Everyone admits the 2B needs to go. Reyes ok not very good – hurt probabluy more than we know. Wright good comeback season, Bay new team woes than hurt, Beltran hurt, Pagan did good. Look at the pitching but the old man Warthan (sp?) returns? Good luck to him leading a staff of #4 at best pitchers, dismantled bullpen. Hojo should have been put on 3B if you really wanted to move him. We need more Met history, commorodity. What happened to Mets old-timers day? This issue was discussed more when Citifield resembled more of a team owned by the Dofgers than a Met owner. Why did that have to be brought to his attention by the fans and media. You need to be told that the old World series trophies should be displayed somewhere in the park and that pictures of Seaver, Koosman, Hernandez, Carter, Strawberry are more important than Jackie Robinson in this situation. Cheap way to put asses in the seats – nostalgia and utilizing retired Mets “family.” I am a die hard all my life Met fan but the Met “family” is more disfunctional than my own!!
