START 7/23 CHATTER
I’m not supporting it, but one positive from the Penn State situation is that it has taken some attention away from the Mets, at least for the people who only follow it casually/read the papers
I dunno – Maybe Alderson needed to be shamed into doing something by the fans
Hey Brian, I have a question for you
wow ichiro to yankees, didn’t see that
yes! and omar infante gone from the Marlins. He killed the mets
Anyways. My question is: Do you think the Mets need to trade Brydak?
LGM!!!
Did you see that Infante is gone from our division!
Infante went where
He went to the Tigers along with Anibal Sanchez
Wow, who did they get?
SP prospect Jacob Turner and some other small pieces
Shedding $ then. I guess things in Miami are not good for real
Nope. Wouldn’t be surprised to see them sell Reyes either, they didn’t backload that contract for nothing
True. Wonder if Hanley is really on block?
I don’t think so because i think he is making reasonable money during his contract
If the Mets can get anything for Byrdak they should trade him. Clearly Alderson doesn’t want to make the playoffs this year and Byrdak’s presence on the roster is a detriment to every other reliever.
When you first posted that LOOGY article, i wasn’t so sure. But now after thinking about it, i am firm believer that the Mets cannot hold a 100% LOOGY like Brydak in the bullpen. Like you said, the other relievers have to compensate for him, and unlike Feliciano or other Lefties, it is a nightmare to have him face RHB.
I was going to follow up my first question with: Do you think he is like a cancer that has to go in order for the bullpen to function at an average level?
The other relievers took it on the chin when Byrdak was facing one batter a night. And now that he’s going 3-4 batters per outing, his numbers are taking a hit.
This is not personal with Byrdak. A team with a good bullpen can afford to carry a specialist like him. The 2012 Mets are simply not that team.
Yea, thats what i was thinking as well, but Sandy probably won’t do anything with him even though we’ve seen that during his 1.5 years he has been here the bullpen has been terrible
I agree a LOOGY on this team is out of bounds
Well, here we go. This is the Mets last stand for the division. If They don’t win the series their only hope will have to be the Wild Cards
Love the optimism there”
It’s the truth. If they don’t win the series they’ll at least be 9.5 out, which is most likely insurmountable
For sure. I just sort of felt that outcome had long been determined.
Well, if they sweep they’ll only be 5.5 out! How’s that for optimism
So, will Sandy act?
Go name!
Nope. And i bet he’s so happy the mets have fallen this far behind because he can use it as an excuse to do nothing
Im afraid I agree
So should TC be proactive and pull CY after the second trip through?
He should have Edgin warming up at that point.
I think it was Brian who suggested that he have a reliever ready after 2nd trip and when he gives up a hit/walk he should immediately pull him
He may need someone sooner I’m afraid
Sandy, sadly, won’t do anything.
Harper really?
I now proclaim him a Met Killer
What’s going on?
2 run HR
I was there in the first extra inning game
The bullpen kills us, but the starters have fallen off, and it seems every game is catch up.
The 3 blown save game Chris?
Y
Is it better to collapse now or at the end of the season?
This game is already quickly out of reach. I still think .500 is a high achieving season to be proud of
a collapse is when you are leading, I would call this more of a correction. Tough when you have 60% starters on DL.
Well I’m not sure but we got it now for better or worse
If they stay around .500, they’ll be in contention the whole year, because i think the 2nd wild card will be around 87-88 wins
Phi metsense
Hi
Maybe even 86
Hi Chris, good post on Alderson
81-82 is a high mark
Because of the pitching, 81 would be good.
Thanks
Another long first for Chris Young. Reminds of a the 1st game post break
Uglyyyyy
Let’s talk about Harvey!
Anyone want to predict his line?
Oh man I’m excited and scared”
I’ll say 5 IP, 3 Walks, 4 K’s, 3 hits, 2 Runs, 1 Earned,
I’ll be happy if he fits in as a #4 starter in 2012.
Thats about where I see him too. Go Ruben. I like that kid!
I love that kid
If Harvey only gives up 2 runs, I think he’ll pitch more than 5 innings.
Ok. Interesting Brian
good inning
Anyone think Ike is sliding backwards again?
He looked bad yesterday
back to bailing
Josh Lewin just asked if the Marlins think they’re still in it this year after their trade with DET. Um, no – that was the point of the trade…
Im done with the long pants. I want stirrups and sanitary’s!
another lousy swing.
I liked the high socks they wore on Alfonzo’s bobblehead day
Murph wearing high socks tonight. mets in pinsripes
Murphy has been hot but I think he hasn’t started vs a lefty in about a month.
Thought it was a good move to give him some time off versus LHP when he was struggling. Not in favor of doing that now.
Bay takes a perfect strike rioght down main street and in two pitches, 0-2
Ugh, i hate my internet connection
been struggling with it too name
Agree,Brian. If he is the 2b he has to play every day when going good.
I think we should see Murphy everyday for the next week, barring something drastic
I’m on computer but I think they are also on ESPN tonight
Yeah, Murph has now earned his stripes at 2B. He’s our guy there and just needs to play full time. Given all the other issues, Id stabilize right now.
And he must play if Wright/Tejada is gonna rest for a day
I agree about 2B and I tip my hat to Cedeno for the nice job he has done
well, here comes trouble
Remember, cedeno is a monster when he plays his former teams
Yes, Cedeno has been a pleasant surprise. I thought he was going to be typical glove man but he’s been useful at the plate, too.
Has cedeno gone somewhere?
into hiding
Oh wait, he played on the 21st
yeah…had nice HR
Howie just admitted he’s not a Star Wars fan. I knew I didn’t trust that guy.
Ha!
He’s saying he’s not a Sci-Fi guy. Neither am I but I could still recognize that Star Wars is a great flick.
CY looks sloppy tonight. He wont go 5
I don’t like Star Wars but in truth i haven’t really say down and watched it, i’ve only seen bits and pieces
funny you say that name…me niether
Nice to see him battle back from 3-0
looked like interference from Morse to me
but he’s at 60 pitches, so hard to see him going deep
It’s hard to see a movie from 1977 that depended on special effects and fully appreciate what a spectacle it was when it came out. Especially when you see it on TV
It’s like I’m watching the game with a bunch of communists. E, tu Chris F?
fraid I missed the connection B
You said you don’t like Star Wars, right?
Is anyone else having trouble envisioning Ichiro in anything but a Mariner’s uniform?
Anyone surprised the Mariners didn’t get more in the Ichiro trade?
wouldnt say I dont like it, only seen a few clips of it here and there.
Josh Lewin just called Zimmerman – “George”
no he didnt!!!!! OMG
Don’t come to the plate against him wearing a hoodie!
I did see many of the costumes at a museum in DC years back and laughed at how “halloween-like” they were!
Kirk could use a bomb all things considered
Is this the Met fan therapy chat?
Indeed!
Welcome Scott!
Anything you’d like to share here in group?
The good news is that we mostly have moved from shock, to grief, and now to acceptance. Welcome aboard Scott!
I haven’t reached acceptance yet. I’m still in anger
Do not pass Go. Do not collect 200$.
Man Zimmerman just ratches up high pitch counts. Just 1 Hit, no walks yet 46 pitches
I did forget anger anger after shock…apologies
Wow. Someone just tweeted its gonna be Duda for Harvey, although i’m not surprised.
I’m fighting the acceptance I wanted to pretend we were playing meaningful games a little longer
Tough to see the plate with the hood over his eyes
Perhaps I spoke too soon for everyone in group here…I have anyway!
Isn’t bargaining in there somewhere, too?
I’m a little surprised it aint Kirk, but his stats are almost the same and he has way better defense
Plus he can play CF. If Kirk goes down Hairston is the backup CF
There’s still Torres
Oh i see what you mean
I guess JV could play there, too
Baxter could play a couple innings there as well, i think he’s due back late this week or next week
Nice
who will go down for him?
I’d rather see Bay in CF than Baxter
I don’t want to see Bay on the field… because that means he’ll be hitting
if you can call what he does hitting
All right – top of the order, let’s get some runs.
RT 2-2!!!
2-2 for ruben
His ceiling is high.
How can you go higher than a 300+ average? I don’t think he’ll hit 400
2-2 for JV – in double plays
deja-poo all over again
This is basically Tejada’s ceiling, let’s see if he can maintain it for a couple of years.
Wright!
DP’s really hurt
Party City!
Should we get the bullpen up this inning?
I expect Tejada to add some power to his game. He’s on pace for 24 doubles and 0 HR. I can easily see him as a 30-35 doubles, 5-8 HR type of guy.
name…DP?
double play
ahhh…yes, they hurt a lot
Yeah Brian. and .300-.320
and a lot of runs
you really think he can grow into 5-8 HR’s? with half his games at citi field?
Tejada hits the ball hard. Power is the one thing that actually increases as a player ages. He’ll learn which balls he can turn on.
I do. Hes had quite a few long doubles off the wall…if he adds some more muscle, those arent far from just clearing the wall
But he’s quite small. And i’d rather he stay nimble for defense
On a positive note, Chris Young is holding them to a .000 3rd time thru the order
good observation.
3-4-5 coming up though. Should the bullpen warm up just in case?
well 1 AB in 3rd loop through, right?
2 AB to be exact
ok, right. Harper in 2 hole
Yes, by the way. Its a mistake not to. Who should get the call?
Beato didn’t pitch yesterday
And he’s capable of going 2, so id choose him
In 2010, Elvis Andrus did not hit a HR in 674 PA. The next year he hit 5. I see no reason Tejada couldn’t do the same.
Only 10 pitches that inning-that’s unZimmerman-like
Brian. Cmon. He plays in a bandbox
3 of the 5 came on the road.
Not a lot of good pitchers in the AL-west last year
In 1992 Jose Offerman hit 1 HR in 598 PA. He finished his career with six years between 5-9 HR.
i would be more comfortable if you said 2-5
Chris Young:1st time-.333, 2nd time-.000, 3rd time-.000
fair enough. but Im gonna say more than 0, and unlikely more than 5
Thing is name, when CY blows up, it goes in a NY minute
I’m trying to be positive!
fair enough, facts is facts!!!
Josh is racking up the hits these days…not killers, but Ill take em
Chris Young in the 7th has a …..23.14 ERA!
ok name, thats a stat i didnt need!
small samples sizes ftw
CY doesnt appear to be able to help himself
At least if we get to the 9th down a few we get to face Clippard
Im happy that I can laugh at that now
yikes
Dangerous for WAS, you dont want to face Wright
c r a p
Here we go. Chris Young and his nemesis: the 7th inning
Keep the ball up Chris! That’s where you are effective
Alright. 1 down 2 to go
1 more to go!
test
Its ok. Walk to get to the pitcher, not a bad strategy
Wow they took him out?
Now we can beat up on that bullpen
YESSSSS! He did it!
Now he has a much more respectable 16.20 ERA in the 7th
name you are way ahead of me
inning over???
Lewin just called him George Zimmerman again.
im still watching wash at bat
I hope Washington gets burned trying to do all these matchups
Ike!
DAVIS!
what????????
That’s what happens when you go crazy with matchups
news please
he hit a HR off michael gonzalez… after they used Storen for 1 AB
im still between innings
murph
!
yes…..?
Bay. I know this isn’t Clippard, but please hit a HR?
im dying here
I think Washington is falling apart here
2 called strikes down the middle
still 2-2?
I guess if you can’t hit you try to take walks
Yes, still 2-2
Will it be Young or the bullpen? Hard decision
inning pover? 2-2?
Where are you right now?
bay out
I want Collins to leave Edgin for the whole inning, unless he gets in trouble
not even gonna let him try? geez
i predict rauch HR
What is better for morale? Winning it with a walk-off or getting a run here and having a scoreless 9th?
Guess we’ll have to settle for the walk-off, if we get one lol
You guys back for the 9th inning rally?
End it right now DW!
Uh oh. Braves rallying against the Fish
All we need is a single Bay, a freaking single
way to go Murph!
How many innings tonight?
Let’s hope 10
But Parnell is offering little hope
I thought Byrdak was n?
Oh great, Lewis is saying Tejada is hurt.
He is
Lewin
Oops byrdak
Im on three devices in different spots
Lewin says he was spiked. I’ll take that as good news.
oh great i come back and it’s 2 on no out
Hurt like anything but at least it’s not a ligament.
At least they’re taking Byrdak out.
what happened?
Comebacker, Byrdak throws to Tejada who apparently got spiked. Mets didn’t get the out. 2 on and no out in the 10th.
Hes covered in mud. Limping but staying in . Looked spiked
Time for the good ole Triple play
Been awhile since they turned one!
Another bull pen melt down
would they have turned the double play if tejada was able to field that?
Got the lead man, so that was nice.
We need to turn 2 on Lombardozzi, don’t want to face Harper the new Met killer with men on
And we used Byrdak instead of Beato to start this inning why?
Harper on deck. Fear destiny
Don’t worry – Dan Warthen’s on the case!
Because Bernadia is LH, i guess. Does make no sense with 2 righties afterwards
test
Great. THis is what we need. Another extra-inning loss
No wild pitch this time Beato.
Ha! That’s the first thing I thought of when he came in, even though there was no one on 3B.
F
Howie is saying Beato hung that one and we’re lucky it was only a single.
We need to keep it at 1 run because that’s doable versus Clippard
so much for that idea
I still don’t understand why Collins started with Byrdak and not Beato
ugh
Beato has been in seven games for the Mets this year and they’ve lost 6 of them. They haven’t all been his fault but it sure feels that way.
Counting this one as a loss…
The thing is, when the bullpen starts bleeding, they can’t stop it
Gorzo walk? wtf
I don’t know what to say anymore.
The goal should be to have relievers start and finish an inning. If you’re going to bring in a guy with a man on base, make it Byrdak to face a LHB.
I think the relievers are thinking “Let me put some men on base so i can get out of the game and someone else can try to clean up my mess and get blamed for the loss”
The loss and the way it happens stinks. But at least it was encouraging to have a good start from Young.
Josh Lewin just said: “Right now it’s simply depressing.”
I agree Brian. You need to let them try to finish an inning, especially if they get the 1st 2 men. The move from Rauch to Edgin worked but unnecessary
And he could have saved Rauch for the another inning
When can i start calling for Collin’s head?
Shouldn’t the pitching coach go first?
Does he make the moves to the bullpen?
I’m not sure how the Mets do it.
Perhaps it should be the bullpen coach
But the problem has been the pitching, just like it was last year.
Ricky Bones i believe?
Score?
you don’t want to know Chris
it’s worse than yesterday
Just saw.
Is this yesterday? Groundhog day
Perhaps the Mets can play matchup at the manager position, Terry Collins the first half… and Wally Backman the 2nd half? I
Collins has another year on his contract, doesn’t he?
Besides there would have to be numerous in-season moves.
I think so. But managers make so little it is so easy to replace them
If we don’t have any money to pick up a reliever for half a season do we have the money to pay two managers?
You don’t hear people not cutting a manager
because of the moeny
I was talking about next year for Collins/backman. This year is pretty much lost
aha, got you.
Doug! Here for the big comeback?
I was only joking anyways-refering to the fact that Collins is getting obssesed with matchups
Um, yeah. Opps– double play…
Matchup FAILED again
Opps = oops. Oops.
Another day. Another loss
So, we’re what, 4-12 since switching to QuickChat? I’ll pay to go back to the other platform…
haha, i wish it were that easy
And how in the world do you lose 8-3 and 8-2 in extras? Oh yeah– something something bullpen something.
8-17 with Francisco on the DL
Like Francisco can be the savior.
Thanks for the fun chat again. Well always have the first half
See everyone tomorrow.
I’m off to watch Ichiro bat for the Yankees. That seems wrong on so many levels, but I would like to see him get a ring. Good night!
Yes. I’ll take a good 1st half/bad 2nd half over a bad 1st half/good 2nd half anyday
That rain falling is my tears by the way
Im depressed
