Shut out for the second time in three games, the Mets offense is struggling to put up runs at the moment. Yoenis Cespedes has just two in his last 27 plate appearances, and the starters have allowed 15 runs over the last 22.2 innings pitched for an ERA of 6.08. At a moment when the Mets had all the momentum in the world, things have turned sour rather rapidly.
I’m still not terribly worried about this team. Pitchers often struggle through September, but when the postseason begins things ratchet back up. The lineup is still deep, despite a current lack of production. And the pitching hasn’t been all that terrible, as Noah Syndergaard was really only bitten by two big home runs today.
These losses happen, but the Mets still have an opportunity to win the series in dramatic fashion as Matt Harvey will try to quell another Yankee onslaught Sunday night. Hopefully the dreading innings limit will not have too much of an impact on the game. Because then we’d have a whole new reason to be upset.
Back to the Future….July, 2015.
That was an embarrassing display.
Missed game. Why did Uribe bat for Duda in the 6th?
Is Terry getting too matchy-matchy?
U didn’t miss a thing.
You can’t win every game. If you win one more game every 16 games, which is 10% of your schedule, then you would be 9-7 or 90-70 over the course of a year. That is playoff baseball. Baseball is not a live and die each day sport.
Syndergaard is a good thrower but needs to be a good pitcher when he learns to waste the 0-2 pitch. He learned a rough lesson yesterday.
TC’s hunch of Uribe for Duda did not pay off. I would have preferred Duda because he was finally hitting with a double and home run the previous game.
Celebrate, First Place, magic # 8, seven game lead and 14 to play, and an exciting game tonight . This game is more necessary to the Yankees who are holding on for a playoff spot. It will be nice to win tonight and maybe put the Yanks in panic city.
Cespedes is now 0-16 since being hit by a pitch and he is now refusing to speak to media.
Not smart for New York.
Terry Collins said that he does not think Cespedes “is afraid in any stretch” followed by the word “but”, and then “we are going to roll him out there…” in the line up.
David Wright came to his defense, which was classic David.
I hope we are not seeing too deeply into the psyche of Cespedes and why he is on his fourth team in two years.
If he hears boos at Citi, he isn’t going to sign.
I had thought that he would consider signing with the Yankees but his refusal to speak to media tells me a more obscure team is more likely his destination, with less media attention, so he can be “The Talent” for them.
I hope getting hit in the back pocket is not the cause of this slump. It would be insane if it it was. He didn’t get hit in the head, or elbow, or knee where real damage can be done. We don’t want that guy if his response to getting hit is fear.
I’m exhausted by the approach our pitchers have with 2 strikes. The number of 0-2 and 1-2 hits we give up shocks me. Where on earth is the coaching and game calling and just pitching smarts to not give a batter something to hit when they have to protect the plate (exception to Dee Gordon, who gets hits well outside the K zone). Instead of expanding the zone, our approach is to challenge with fastballs. Ok, do it at the letters, not middle middle, or on the ground…bounce the goddam ball in and make them chase. And Plawecki needs to be elevating in his set up, or slamming his mitt on the ground demanding it be bounced in. Anything other than trying to challenge hitters by just blowing them away with fastball in the zone. Literally anything other than that.
