1994 COLLECTOR’S CHOICE KIRK PRESLEY

1994: The Year in Presley News

  • Lisa Marie Presley married Michael Jackson on May 26, 1994. Which was just exactly as random and weird as it sounds.
  • Lisa Marie and Michael appeared on a December 15 TV special titled “Elvis: The Tribute.” On this long-forgotten/misbegotten show, songs from the Elvis Presley catalog were interpreted by a diverse cast of performers, including Tony Bennett, Bryan Adams, Sammy Hagar, U2, and, um, Wet Wet Wet.
  • And speaking of Wet Wet Wet, the Scottish popsters had the biggest hit of their career in 1994 with a cover of Love Is All Around, which topped the UK charts for 15 weeks. The original version was a 1968 smash for the Troggs, and was written by that group’s lead singer, the late great Reg Presley.
  • The Godfathers (of “Birth, School, Work, Death” fame) reunited briefly in 1994. The band was founded originally in 1985 by brothers Chris and Peter Coyne as the Sid Presley Experience.
  • One-time Mariners slugger Jim Presley entered his third year of retirement in 1994. He would return to the game as a minor-league hitting instructor a couple of years later, and is currently the batting coach for the Baltimore Orioles.
  • Kirk Presley, the Mets first-round draft pick in 1993 and third cousin of Elvis, completed his first minor-league season in 1994. Presley was ranked by Baseball America as the 59th best overall prospect heading into the season, but he struggled in Pittsfield and St. Lucie. Subsequent arm problems ensured that Presley would never make it out of A ball, and he retired in 1998 at the age of 23.

    Coincidence? Hmmmmm….

What fun the headline writers would have had if Presley had made it to the majors!
Too bad the Mets picked Presley 8th, bypassing – among many others – Torii Hunter, the righty-hitting OF we still desperately need here in 2013.

All Shook Up! Don’t Be Cruel! Heartbreak Hotel! You’re right, Brian– the headlines would have written themselves…
