Round 3:

Winners: Boston got Denney and if they can sign him he’s the clear pick of the round.

Pick #76: Ivan Wilson, RF, [Ruston HS]

Scouting: At 6’3” and 220 Lbs Wilson is a big player who projects to have a big bat.  The power is there and he seems to have enough of a hitting background to make an impact.  He’s an athlete and while he’s listed as a center fielder he seems a little large to stick to that role.

After Digesting: With Bobby Wahl available I can’t understand why the scouting people are so opposed to college players.  That said, Wilson seems like a solid pick and if he joins Smith on the same minor league club they should have a lot of power bats in the lineup.

Pick #84: Casey Meisner, RHSP [Cypress Woods HS]

Scouting: Big player he’s 6’7” and has a 3 pitch mix and projects to have a PLUS fastball.  He sits at 94 right now and should be able to build on that as he matures and puts on muscle.

After Digesting: The picks are fine but I feel like I was owed something for the lame 2nd round pick.  I’m not given anyone who projects as an over-cap player in this round.

Round 4:

Winners: Dylan Covey was a 1st rounder once upon a time and he could be a steal for the Athletics at 131st overall.

Pick #116: Lee Mazzilli, 2B, [Connecticut, Senior]

Scouting: This is partially a sentimental pick but also taking a guy who has a solid bat and the ability to play the infield.  He’s a switch hitter and not that big.

After Digesting: It’s cute but I wonder if the Mets are ignoring some of the talent I see on the draft board because they’ve been told they would not sign for the money they are allowed to spend.

Round 5:

Winners: If Bobby Wahl signs he is an extremely big steal.  The Mets getting King or the Giants getting Slania are both solid runners up but the Athletics are doing great in this draft.

Pick #116: Jared King, OF, [Kansas State, Junior]

Scouting: One of the college outfielders on my list.  King was ranked higher than Andrew Church and will undoubtedly cost some of the extra cap room the Mets have at this point.  He is a solid hitter with average speed and power that could play in a corner outfield position.  He’s a switch hitter but there is some stiffness in his swing.

After Digesting: This is the first pick where I am completely happy.  There is a certain high school outfielder I’d like in round 6 and I will lay off insulting Alderson.

Just pretend King was taken 38th and they stole Church at 116!

I would sooner pretend that we drafted Wilson in the 2nd and Church not at all.
