Mystery Met 6

Card of the Week’s Mystery Met maven has been recovering from trivia Tommy John, and after a winter of long tossing on the back fields, he’s ready to take the mound again.

So here’s the pitch: identify this Met with the sad and soulful spring-training eyes, and you’ll win a 2014 Topps Matt Harvey yellow variation.

The contest ends on April 1 (no fooling)– good luck!

It looks a little bit like Jeff Kent but I thought he had a stache when he played here. Plus, that seems a little too obvious for one of these features. I’ll keep thinking about it.

I was gonna say John Stearns but now I don’t know. Odd hat placement

    Aggggh….Tommy Moore?

  • Charlie O'Brien

How about Tidewater Tides pitching great Gary Manderbach…..

  • Doug Parker

You are correct, Charlie! It is the pride of West Reading High and Penn State, the current owner of Manderbach Ford in Reading, PA, Gary Manderbach.

Manderbach came up in the Yankees system and moved to the Mets for the 1972 season. He was with the organization through 1975, spending two years at Tidewater. He finished out his career with the Phillies organization– fittingly his final year was at AA Reading. Manderbach spent a total of eight seasons in the minors, but never got the call.

    Congrats, Charlie!

  • Brian Joura

I would not have put that photo in the 1970s.

But congratulations to Charlie for getting such a tough one!

Look at the sideburns Brian,70’s all the way!

  • Doug Parker

I have made my peace with the fact that I will never stump the Mets360 audience. I’ll keep trying, but I know that in the end it’s futile…

  • Ryan Manderbach

Gary is my dad. I’d love to know where you found that photograph.

    • Doug Parker

Well, Ryan, you made my Father’s Day! That is awesome.

Sometime last year, the Topps Vault store on eBay was auctioning off color negatives of an assortment of photos in their archives, and this was one of them.

We’d love to hear more about your dad and his time in pro ball if you have a chance to share!
