Once again Bartolo Colon took care of business, as he went six innings and only allowed two runs. The Mets ended up beating their division rivals 5-3.

  • The Mets offense had a good showing against Alex Wood, as they scored five runs, and took advantage of an errant pickoff throw from Wood.
  • Wilmer Flores started things off with a home run, and John Mayberry Jr. hit a two-run shot in the fourth inning, which gave the Mets a 3-0 lead.
  • Michael Cuddyer continues his clutch hitting, as he provided the Mets with some insurance by hitting an RBI double.
  • Darrell Ceciliani had a nice showing, as he had a pinch-hit single, stole second base, and scored a run.
  • Jace Peterson is just one of those pesky Atlanta hitters that gets on base at will, as he went 2-4 with a walk tonight.
  • The stressful parts of the game occurred when the bullpen came in. Alex Torres started the seventh and loaded up the bases. Luckily, the Mets turned a double play against Nick Markakis, which trimmed the lead to one run, but Carlos Torres came in and got the Mets out of it. Jenrys Familia struggled in the ninth, but got Markakis to ground into another double play for the Mets to win it.

Colon won his ninth game of the season, and the Mets start this series off on the right foot, and play tomorrow afternoon. Jacob deGrom will go against Shelby Miller in what should be a pitcher’s duel.

I just got home from the game & the park had a great atmosphere. Oh, and I got my face on the scoreboard!

PS — They would have turned 4 (!!!) double plays, but Flores botched a grounder in the 5th, accounting for the first Atlanta run.

The bobble didn’t account for the run as there were no outs and the bases loaded. Further, the original runner from second scored on the next hitter’s double. However, Flores should have made that play. He took his eye off the ball to locate Herrera and messed up the DP only getting a force.

Mayberry’s OPS went up 100 points in this game. I wanted him to start the day after his four-hit game and I wouldn’t mind seeing him get a start tonight, either, in place of Granny or Lagares..

Agree on Mayberry. I haven’t said a word of criticism about the guy, who is good at one thing, hitting LHP. Over time, that will be revealed — though, I guess, “time” could mean 2-3 years of sporadic ABs.

He started slow, never got any consistent ABs (appropriate to his role), and has taken a long time to find his rhythm. I still believe in him as a bat against LHP; better than Curtis, for sure.

It is too bad that he is so awful aganst RHP, but it’s almost a pill you’ve got to swallow from time to time, trying to keep him somewhat sharp. I should get a few spot starts against specific RHP; just think of him as “4th Outfielder Lite.”

Colon with his ninth win and Sandy wants to extend him but Colon is looking for two years. 🙂
I can’t imagine that a pitching starved team going for a pennant wouldn’t give a prospect like in the Byrd trade.
Mayberry is finally performing like he is supposed to. I am all in favor of James idea of 4th outfielder lite.
Familia did his K Rod impersonation with similar results, he got the save! He is an all star on my 2015 all star roster.
Cuddyer is the team barometer again. When he hits it makes the batting order function better.
1 1/2 game lead. I am enjoying it!
    DeGrominator goes today.
