Generally, Larry Brooks is not my favorite baseball columnist. But in today’s article he hit the nail on the head. Even though he very likely did not write the headline, that was perfect, too. In an article entitled, “Terry Collins complicating the Mets’ simplest problem,” Brooks wrote:

Really, it is neither a difficult nor controversial concept to grasp. The Mets, who dipped the tippy-tip of their collective big toe is in the shallowest of wild-card race water before it was bitten Thursday by the Nationals, owe it to themselves, their athletes and their cynical fan base to play it safe rather than be sorry when it comes to protecting their young arms who comprise the franchise’s only legitimate hope for the future.

There can be no debate about this.

So why then does the hierarchy — or at least manager Terry Collins — feel the need to revisit the issue on a regular basis?

No doubt that managing any team, much less the Mets, is a difficult thing to do. So, it’s imperative that the manager be decisive in applying common sense. The Mets want to protect their young pitchers who are at their innings limit. They have pitchers who due to injuries earlier in the year who are not at their limit. It’s not rocket science. Bill James once said that the best thing a manager can do is to ask (and answer) the question: What needs to change here? Hopefully, the next manager of the Mets, among other things, stops making things harder than they have to be.

One comment on “Mets should be decisive about applying common sense

From the top down it doesn’t seem like this organization is run based on common sense. Apart from Alderson possibly.
