Mets Rewind: July 1

Here’s what happened on this day in New York Mets history:

1963: New York Mets traded Charlie Neal and Sammy Taylor to the Cincinnati Reds for Jesse Gonder.

1971: New York Mets released Al Weis.

1989: The Mets lose 6-2 to the Cincinnati Reds. Dwight Gooden left the game in the third inning for what was described as “severe pain” in his right shoulder. The Mets would learn later that Gooden had a slight tear in the muscle in the back of the shoulder. Gooden didn’t start another game the last three months of season, but did make two relief appearances.

1995: New York Mets signed free agent Alex Escobar.

2003: New York Mets traded Roberto Alomar to the Chicago White Sox for Edwin Almonte, Royce Ring and Andrew Salvo.
