Noah Syndergaard did his best Bugs Bunny imitation and (almost) single-handedly beat the Dodgers, 4-3, Wednesday night in Los Angeles.

  • Syndergaard needed just 95 pitches to complete eight innings. He allowed just two runs, both coming on solo shots, walked one and fanned six. It was a very strong outing.
  • But as good as he was on the mound, where he really shined was in the batter’s box. Syndergaard put the Mets on the board first with a bomb to right center in the third inning. And after being asked to bunt earlier in the at-bat, Syndergaard hit a go-ahed three-run homer in the fifth inning.
  • It was the first time since Walt Terrell in 1983 that a Mets pitcher homered twice in the same game. It was also the 15th straight game the Mets have won when their starter has homered, a streak dating back to 1996. Hat tip to Ed Leyro for that factoid.
  • Jeurys Familia came on and got his 12th save despite allowing a run in the 9th. He was helped out by some solid defensive play by both middle infielders.
  • The Mets won despite loading the bases twice and coming away with no runs both times.

Walt Terrell hit two 2-run homers, I believe.
Eric Campbell should be replaced by TJ Rivera at month’s end if he can’t get a runner home with less than two outs three times in the same game!
    Love David Wright, but….

    Edit, look what I found:

      Doh!

That’s what I get for starting to write it before the game was over. Thanks for the correction and I’ll fix it now.

Ha!!! I finally got some much needed sleep, so I would have posted it before the game was over!
…these west coast trips are killing me!

It looks like Flores to the DL with Sean Gilmartin called up to replace him. The plan is for Verrett to move to the rotation and Gilmartin to replace him in the pen.

I like both Verrett and Gilmartin. Verrett’s done a terrific job when allowed to start. But given that this is (hopefully) just one start, doesn’t it make more sense to allow both pitchers to remain in their roles?

The two home runs were awesome but the third at bat with the bases loaded was riveting entertainment with Syndergaard hitting foul ball rockets into the stands. It was fun being a Met fan anticipating the next unlikely hit but not dissappointing that it did not occur. It will go down in my memory like the Swoboda vs Carlton game.
Campbell is not expected to do much as the 25th man and everyone is entitled to a bad day, but he needs to avoid games like last night if he wants to be on the roster in September.
My vote is for TJ Rivera to eventually replace Flores who is heading to the disabled list but he is not on the 40 man roster.
