After a demoralizing sweep in Washington, the Mets came home to face the Cubs, who most pundits have going to the World Series. After falling behind early, the Mets rallied to take the lead and survived threats in both the eighth and ninth innings to escape with a 4-3 win Thursday night.

  • Brandon Nimmo played a key role in the comeback, as he smoked an RBI single up the middle and took second on the throw. Nimmo came round to score the go-ahead run when the Cubs’ second baseman made an aggressive play but the third baseman was caught napping. Tough error for Javier Baez there. Wasn’t a great throw but it could/should have been handled.
  • The Mets’ first run came on a monster homer from Yoenis Cespedes, which reached the third deck.
  • Steven Matz battled, which is all we should expect from a guy who wants to have surgery. Both the Mets and Matz are in tough situations here. The Mets want him to suck it up and Matz doesn’t want to look like a wuss. I don’t envy either, although I’m not sure the current plan is in the best long-term interests of either the club or the player. We shall see.
  • Erik Goeddel came on and pitched 1.2 scoreless innings to pick up the win. Addison Reed and Jerry Blevins tag teamed on the eighth, with Blevins earning a comebacker from pinch-hitter Jason Heyward.
  • Someone needs to tell Jeurys Familia there’s no extra credit for degree of difficulty. He put runners on second and third with no outs but came up with two Ks and an infield pop up to keep his consecutive save streak intact.
  • Mets are now 30-7 when they score at least four runs.

Nimmo was pretty much “Pinching Himself”….. overjoyed. He took a good look at the full stadium and took it all in after he slid into second base.

His post game interview with Tom Verducci was worth the watch…I will try to find and post for those of you who watched on the SNY Feed.

    Pretty Cool.

Where are you getting your information regarding Matz? He seems like a competitor to me.

A little speed on the bases in that 7th, keyed by De Aza going first to third on Nimmo’s single, drawing the throw, and allowing an alert Nimmo to take second.

Glad to see Nimmo up top and Cabrera moved down. The veteran SS should bat 8th. Now TC needs to move Travis up to 6th, at least. Flores and Loney can’t hit ahead of him. It’s willfully misguided.

This is the team, plus Reyes, and Lagares. I don’t see the big trade. Time for Duda to get back on the field. And cross our fingers about the elbows.

Jimmy, I agreed with everything you wrote. So much so, that halfway through I had to recheck the name, LOL.

Problem becomes that if Conforto, Lagares, Nimmo, Cespedes are all performing (cross fingers in locked position), what happens to Granny?

  • Eraff

Gus….. if they all perform??? That’s gonna be your problem? Don’t ever attempt to solve that.
