Back-to-back sub-.500 seasons can’t dampen the enthusiasm of a new season. And not only do we have the hope of Spring, there are exciting new players and a brand new contract extension for Jacob deGrom, too. So, how excited are you? What kind of year do you predict for the Mets?

    First vote is in! LOL

Five votes in, 4 optimists (87-91)
And one true met fan (under 81)
(I say this as one of the optimists).

I think 87-91 wins is a realistic number. Depends on health and also what Alonso and Cespedes may be able to do later in the year.

It was a lot easier to get 90 W playing beat down Marlins, Phillies, and Braves. It wont be so easy this year.

It’s true that the Mets beat up on the Phillies the last time they won 90 games. But they were 11-8 against both the Braves and Marlins that year. Good records, for sure, but not ones that are unattainable.

Hopefully they do not go 0-13 against the Cubs and Pirates like they did in 2015. Also, the Mets get to play the AL Central and not the AL East this year.

I took out my trusty magnetic refrigerator schedule that the Mets gave me on the last day of the season at Citi Field and I also looked at the projections at fangraphs. My analysis indicates 88 wins. I used the same methodology that I used in August 2015 when many had predicted the Mets were finished. I’m looking at you Chris F! I will be starting my season in Miami next Wednesday hopefully with the $137.5M deGrominator pitching. Let’s Go Mets!

Doesn’t matter the year – Chris is pessimistic!

I’m calling a 3 game sweep of the Nats in D.C. to start the season.

    Game 1: Mets win 4-2
    DeGrom 6IP, 7Ks, 1BB, 5 hits, 2 runs
Lugo, Familia, Diaz 3 scoreless in relief
Cano 3 hits. Alonso hits a 2 run homer off Scherzer in the 1st inning. Ramos go ahead RBI in the 5th or 6th.

    Game 2: Mets win 5-4
    Noah 6IP 6Ks 1 BB 7 hits, 2 runs
Gsellman and Avilan give up a run each
    Diaz gets save #2
Conforto homers. McNeil and Rosario with multiple hits.

    Game 3: Mets win 3-0
    Zack 6IP 8Ks 2 BB 4 hits
Wilson and Diaz to close it out for save #3
Ramos again delivers against his old team, and Alonso hits his 2nd homer.

87 wins and third place with the lack of starting pitching depth and Matz and Vargas’ crapiness will sink the Mets playoffs hopes.

So I went with 82-86, but with further deliberation I see more of 86-88. More importantly, that may be enough to take the division. This is the most competitive NL East in memory, and while the Marlins will be a punching bag, the overall balance of the NL should keep division winner win totals lower than usual.

      I love it, a 174 game season!
