After 37 games, the Mets are in first place despite an offense that wasn’t producing much when healthy and which now is decidedly unhealthy. The pitching staff was for the most part very good when healthy and now is decidedly unhealthy. The team is 11-4 at home and 9-13 on the road. They are 9-7 in one-run games and an unsurprising 3-6 in blowouts, unsurprising given how anemic the offense has been most of the season. Finally, the Mets are 11-6 against division foes. Taking all of that in – how do you feel now about the 2021 club?

I like the team. They are in first place. The overall pitching has been very good. I do think Lindor and McCann will come around. I am concerned about the poor performance from McNeill, Alonso and Conforto.

Not extending Boras managed Conforto may turn out to be a shrewd financial move.

I really do like the makeup of the backups. Much more small ball oriented.

Let’s see if we can survive the injuries.

If,and it’s a big IF, the injuries come back to normal I see a playoff team that might win 90 games.

Kind of amazing that the Mets are leading the division over the Braves and Phillies, which both seem like better team to me. They each lost a lot to injuries. Braves losing Soroka and D’arnau will probably cost them big time. Phillies should recover and their rotation can compete with the Mets at full strength. The race could come down to bullpens. Whoever can get the last nine outs consistently will likely prevail.

I still feel like they are a playoff team. The next month will be trying because of the injuries and they might be passed by Phillies and/or Marlins. When the injuries heal and they are near strength then they are the cream of the division and should have a very good second half of the season to win the division.

I guess they are a playoff team if the NL East remains this bad. Its safe to say, the only playoff team will be the pennant winner from the East. Can they be that team? Sure. Is it inspirational baseball we are watching. Not so much.
