Well, it was my dad’s birthday and dad’s not a sports fan. So, I didn’t see the game. Actually, that’s not entirely true. I saw one inning. But it was a good one because I saw the Cuddyer homer.

So, tell me what I missed.

    Gut reaction: 🙂

Harvey didn’t have his best stuff, but really beared down to hold. 1-0 lead through 7. Scherzer ate up the Mets, 10 Ks, and a pitch Cuddy took over the new wall. Flores can neither hit nor catch nor throw. Lagares had 2 hits and a highlight reel coming in off Desi. A Torres got one out in 8th on a deep deep fly ball. Familia in for. 5 out save. bottom 8, we attacked their pen, culminating with a bases clearing double by Murph, who hit a liner right at Werth who misplayed it, and it went over his head. Familia had a nice 9th. Mets win. Harv 5-0, Familia 10 saves.

Happy birthday to your dad Brian, and many more.

My gut reaction was that Flores’ first misplay was a one bouncer to first that Duda should have caught. Flores seems afraid to “air it out”. But when he does air it out and throws sidearm, it goes wide (second misplay). But, he did settle down and make the next four or five plays routinely. Also, on the two double plays it’s nice to have a second baseman there. Murphy at third looked like he was playing there forever.

As Chris said, Flores couldn’t touch Scherzer and Harvey wasn’t spotting his fastball so he threw a lot of sliders.
The one out A. Torres did get, was a flyball to the fence in left center when Tyler Moore “got under it” with a man on first and the score 1-0. If he hit it square, it would have left Queens. Collins took out Torres right after that and went straight to Familia with one out in the eighth.

Chris covered most of the rest.

Didn’t see the game, but saw highlights. Lagares’ catch was phenomenal, as usual. Didn’t see any Flores or Murphy plays, but I’ve always thought Murphy could be a good third baseman. DRS sees him at just below average there, but UZR is less kind. Not enough power though.

Flores, what can you say. A month isn’t exactly a great tryout, but he does have to play better than this to keep his job. I think I’d rather see Herrera play out of position sooner than watch this for the next five months. I think he’ll be a manageable sieve at SS, but it will put pressure on his defense.

I hope he can stick with it though.

The Mets say Flores is on a long leash. In my experience dogs on long leashes are more likely to get into trouble, like crapping on the neighbor’s lawn before you can reel them in. But the problem is in the metaphor, I think, not so much in Wilmer. He’ll never win a gold glove, but he’s not the dog he looks like now. I’m glad the Mets are being patient with him. They made the choice to give him the job so now give him the chance to live up to it. It is brutal to watch, though.

Werth’s misplay was a great gift, from Jesus, who has had enough of the impersonation.

And Brian, you neglected to mention how old your dad is now…

Ha, Jesus showed him. Or was that Felipe?
