My Mets 2024 preseason breakdown

Following his last Mets start in late July of last season, Max Scherzer seemed to be very perturbed about the David Robertson trade. While reporters had their microphones and recorders on him, Scherzer had no problem stating his problem with the team’s sell off. Well, the next afternoon, he was part of that sell off. [...]

Place your imaginary wager on who gets cut to make room for Diekman and Fujinami

The Mets have agreed to deals with Jake Diekman and Shintaro Fujinami but the deals are not official. Currently, the 40-man roster is full, meaning they'll have to cut or trade two players to make room for the new relievers. We've seen that David Stearns is willing to cut guys that he signed, so that [...]

Going down memory lane with Darryl Strawberry and Doc Gooden

One of my earliest Mets’ memories is Game 5 of the 1969 World Series.  My second grade home room teacher, Mrs. Goudey, let us watch the game on a clunky old black and white television she wheeled into the classroom on a tall metal cart.  When she turned on the game, Jerry Koosman had already [...]

Tyler Stuart and making major league relievers out of minor league starters

One of my beliefs is that the farm system should be able to create major league relievers from minor league starters, something which seems like it doesn’t happen enough for my tastes. But it’s one thing to have a thought on how things should be; it’s another thing for that thought to be grounded in [...]

The nine Mets players who were also Brooklyn Dodgers

National League baseball deserted New York when the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants departed after the 1957 season. When the Mets started in 1962, they tried to claim the history of both of those teams. But most people felt the team was closer to the old Dodgers than the old Giants. With that thought [...]

Mets sign RHP Shintaro Fujinami

The New York Mets made another bullpen move. After retaining Adam Ottavino, the Mets added another right-handed reliever in Shintaro Fujinami. The team signed Fujinami to a one-year, $3.35 million contract. The deal also includes $850,00 in incentives. Fujinami, 29, pitched for the Oakland A’s and the Baltimore Orioles last season. Overall, he had a [...]

Mets 2024 projections: Jose Quintana

From 2014-2017, Jose Quintana posted four straight 4.0 or better fWAR seasons. Then, from 2018-2021, he recorded a combined total of 5.6 fWAR, with 3.5 of that coming in 2019 alone. Quintana then had a big bounceback season in 2022 (something the Mets are hoping Luis Severino can duplicate) with a 4.0 fWAR split between [...]

Pete Alonso and the problem of chasing low and/or away

In the 21st Century you simply don’t see power hitters who don’t rack up big strikeout numbers. Gone are the days when Joe DiMaggio could hit 46 HR while only striking out 37 times, like he did in 1937. Instead, it’s much more common to see someone like Kyle Schwarber, who hit 47 HR in [...]

Mets still need more relief help even after reuniting with Adam Ottavino

The New York Mets brought back a familiar face to their bullpen. They brought back righty Adam Ottavino on a one-year, $4.5 million deal. Ottavino will help the bullpen, which struggled mightily last season. Even though he too was up and down in 2023, he is still one of their more reliable relievers and had [...]

Remembering pitching coaches Rube Walker and Mel Stottlemyre

A point of commonality for the two Mets championship seasons of 1969 and 1986 was that both teams possessed an excellent pitching coach, Rube Walker for the ‘69 squad and Mel Stottlemyre in ‘86. Walker was a baseball lifer, his playing career was mostly as a backup catcher, first for the Cubs, then for the [...]

One area of improvement for Francisco Alvarez

The New York Mets overall had a disappointing 2023 season. One of the few brights spots in that season was rookie catcher Francisco Alvarez. In his first full season in the major leagues, Alvarez showed glimpses of why he was the Mets No. 1 prospect, heading into 2023. Offensively, he showed his power in big [...]
